What a serious copper enquiry actually contains

Mattar Mineral Trade6 min read

Most copper enquiries cannot be answered — not because supply is short, but because the request omits the five variables that determine whether any offer is possible.

A copper enquiry that reads "we require copper, please quote your best price" cannot be answered responsibly. Copper is not one product. It reaches buyers as mined concentrate, refined cathode, rod, and recycled scrap, and those forms have different producers, different quality languages, different logistics and different price formation.

The five variables

Form comes first. Cathode and concentrate are not substitutes, and a plant configured for one cannot consume the other. Stating the form narrows the supplier universe immediately and makes every subsequent question answerable.

Grade and impurity tolerance come second. Two parcels described by the same headline form can be commercially very different once deleterious elements are accounted for. A buyer who states an impurity ceiling receives offers that can actually be qualified; a buyer who does not receives offers that will fail at the plant.

Volume and cadence come third, and they are two separate things. A one-off parcel and a rolling monthly requirement are sourced differently — the second justifies a producer relationship, the first usually does not.

Destination is fourth. The delivery port or plant determines freight, duty, and often which origins are commercially viable at all. It is not a detail to be settled later; it changes the price.

Incoterms are fifth and are routinely left vague. The difference between FOB and CIF is not administrative — it moves cost, risk and insurance responsibility between the parties, and an offer without an agreed Incoterm has no defined meaning.

Why this matters commercially

A well-formed enquiry is not bureaucracy. It compresses the time between first contact and a quotable position, and it filters out counterparties who were never in a position to supply. In a market where the constraint is usually verified material rather than material in the abstract, that filtering is the valuable part.

It also protects the buyer. An offer made against a vague enquiry is an offer the seller can reinterpret later. Precision at the enquiry stage is the cheapest dispute prevention available.
